Sthala Mahātmyam

At Srivaikuntam on the southern bank of the Tamiraparani, the Kailasanathar temple is the sixth of the Nava Kailasam and the sthala of Shani, the planet Saturn. Tradition holds that when sage Uromasa (Romasa) floated nine flowers on the river, the sixth came to rest here, and he raised a Kailasanathar lingam upon the spot. The temple was built by the Pandya ruler Chandrakula Pandya and greatly expanded during the Madurai Nayak period under Veerappa Nayaka in the early seventeenth century, acquiring its spacious halls and towers. Shiva is worshipped as Kailasanathar and the Goddess as Sivakami. As a Saturn sthala, it is thronged by devotees seeking relief from the trials of Shani, including Sade Sati and the seven-and-a-half-year cycle, who offer oil abhishekam and prayers. Chief festivals are the Brahmotsavams in Chittirai (April-May) and Aippasi (October-November), Maha Sivaratri, Kanda Sashti, and the Thirukalyanam that draws thousands. It lies close to the famous Vaikuntanathar (Nava Tirupathi) shrine, making Srivaikuntam a doubly sacred halt.
