Sthala Mahātmyam

The Kailasanathar temple at Kodaganallur, on the Tamiraparani a short way from Tirunelveli, is the third of the Nava Kailasam and is associated with Angaraka (Chevvai), the planet Mars. Like its sister shrines it belongs to the tradition of sage Agastya's disciple Romasa (Uromasa), who floated nine blossoms on the river and enshrined a Kailasanathar lingam at each landing place, the whole forming nine Kailasas along the sacred waters. Shiva is worshipped here as Kailasanathar and the Goddess as Sivakami Amman. Because the shrine is a Mars sthala, devotees afflicted by Mangala dosha, with its bearing on marriage, property and courage, come to seek remedy. A distinctive local observance is the offering to Nandi of a garland strung from yellow thread and turmeric pieces. Maha Sivaratri is celebrated with special grandeur, and the fortnightly Pradosham, along with Thai Amavasya and Aadi rituals for ancestors, draws steady streams of worshippers. Pilgrims on the nine-temple yatra pause here as the third station along the river.
