Sthala Mahātmyam
On the right bank of the Tamiraparani at Cheranmahadevi stands the Ammainathar temple, second of the Nava Kailasam and linked to Chandra, the Moon. It belongs to the chain of nine shrines said to have been founded by Romasa Maharishi, grandson of Brahma and disciple of sage Agastya, who cast nine flowers into the river and installed a Shiva lingam wherever each settled. The temple, held to be about five centuries old in its present form, preserves the beloved legend of the devotee Nandan (Nandanar): to grant his humble servant an unobstructed vision of the Lord, Shiva bade his mount Nandi shift aside, and to this day the Nandi here sits slightly off the central axis. Shiva is worshipped as Ammainathar and the Goddess as Avudainayaki (Oppilanayaki). Devotees seeking relief from afflictions of the Moon offer worship here. The principal festival is the ten-day Vaikasi Brahmotsavam (May-June), alongside Tirukarthikai, Maha Sivaratri, Panguni Uthiram and Aipasi Annabhishekam.
