Sthala Mahātmyam

Sernthapoomangalam, in Thoothukudi district, holds the ninth and final Kailasam of the Tamiraparani chain, the sthala of Shukra, the planet Venus. Its very name records the founding legend: when Uromasa (Romasa) Maharishi set nine flowers adrift, the last blossom 'came to rest' (serntha) on this bank, giving the flowering-village its name, Serntha-poo-mangalam. Worshipping Shiva here is held to equal worship at the Sukra sthala of Agneeswarar at Kanjanoor near Kumbakonam. Shiva is enshrined as Kailasanathar with his consort Azhagiya Ponnammai, and the temple uniquely houses a murti of Kubera seated upon an elephant with his consorts Sanganidhi and Padhanidhi, worshipped for wealth and prosperity, fitting for a Venus shrine. Nine lingams are enshrined within, commemorating the whole Nava Kailasam. As the concluding station, pilgrims who have journeyed the river from Papanasam complete their yatra here, praying to Shukra for prosperity, marital harmony, comfort and the arts. Maha Sivaratri, Pradosham and the Sukra transit are the chief occasions of worship at this final abode.
