Vadapalani Andavar Temple, one of Chennai's most thronged Murugan shrines, began humbly around 1890 as a thatched shrine where the devotee Annaswami Nayakar worshipped a picture of Murugan brought from Palani, hence the name Vadapalani, the 'northern Palani.' Guided by a dream in which a sage affirmed the Lord's living presence, Annaswami became the temple's founder and first priest, and it grew famous for his Arul Vaakku, divinely inspired utterances believed to foretell events and resolve devotees' troubles of health, marriage, study and livelihood. Rebuilt from the 1920s with a towering Rajagopuram, the temple enshrines Murugan as Andavar with consorts Valli and Deivanai, and draws immense crowds; its marriage halls make it a favoured wedding venue. Chief festivals include the grand eleven-day Vaikasi Brahmotsavam, Thai Poosam, Panguni Uthiram and Skanda Sashti, celebrated with great splendour and processions through the surrounding streets.
