Kundrathur Murugan Temple crowns a small hillock in the Chennai suburb of Kundrathur, reached by a climb of 84 steps, and is popularly called 'Then Thanigai,' the southern Tiruttani. Built in the 12th century under the Chola king Kulottunga II, it is distinguished as one of the very few Murugan shrines where the Lord faces north. Its most cherished speciality is that Subramaniar, though enshrined with both consorts, reveals only one goddess at a time: viewed from one side he appears with Valli, and from the other with Deivanai. Tradition holds that Murugan halted and rested on this hill while journeying from Tiruttani to Tiruporur after his war on Surapadman. Kundrathur is also celebrated as the birthplace of Sekkizhar, the saint who composed the Periya Puranam and served as minister to the very king who raised this temple. Chief festivals include Thai Poosam, Panguni Uthiram, Vaikasi Visakam and Skanda Sashti, when devotees throng the hilltop sanctum.
