Sthala Mahātmyam
Ettukudi Subramaniya Swamy Temple, in Nagapattinam district, is celebrated for its extraordinary monolithic image of Murugan, three-faced and twelve-armed, seated upon his peacock. Uniquely, the peacock's head here turns to the left, whereas in most Murugan temples it faces right; tradition credits the same master sculptor with the images at Ettukudi, Sikkal and Engan. According to the Skanda Purana, after slaying Surapadman with his Vel, Murugan visited many holy places in the Tamil land, and Ettukudi is honoured as one of the spots where he stayed. The sthala's Shiva is worshipped as Soundara Nayakar, yet the temple's fame rests upon Murugan, enshrined with his consorts Valli and Deivanai. The Chola-style shrine, likely of eighth to ninth century origin and later rebuilt, is praised in Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh. Its foremost festival is the ten-day Chithirai Pournami, alongside Vaikasi Visakam and Skanda Sashti, drawing devotees to this ancient Kaveri-delta seat of Murugan.
