Sthala Mahātmyam

Vaimoornathar Temple at Thiruvaimur, in Tiruvarur district, is a Paadal Petra Sthalam revered in the hymns of Appar and Sambandar. Shiva is worshipped as Vaimoornathar, believed to have been adored here by Surya, the Sun god, with his consort Paalinum Nanmozhi Ammai (Ksheeropavachani), whose name praises speech sweeter than milk. The temple is one of the Sapta Vidanga Sthalams, its Vidanga deity called Nalla Vidangar. Here Thyagaraja performs the Kamala Natanam — a serene dance likened to a kamala (lotus) gently swaying in the breeze upon its waters. In keeping with the Muchukunda legend centred at Thiruvarur, this shrine received one of the seven Vidanga images gifted by Indra to the devout king. The sthala vriksha is the jackfruit tree, and the sacred tank is the Surya Theertham, recalling the Sun's worship of the Lord. Modest yet ancient, the temple preserves the Somaskanda Vidanga tradition and stands among the seven dancing shrines of the Cauvery delta venerated on the Sapta Vidanga pilgrimage circuit.
