Sthala Mahātmyam
The Veerateeswarar Temple at Korukkai (Thirukkurukkai), in Mayiladuthurai district, is the Ashta Veerattanam shrine of Kama Dahana. Per the legend, when the celestials, needing a son of Shiva to destroy the asura Taraka, sent Kama (Manmatha), the god of desire, to break Shiva's austerity, the Lord opened his third eye and burned Kama to ashes; later, moved by Rati's grief, he restored him to life. Shiva is worshipped here as Veerateeswarar, and as the festival deity in the form of Kama Dahana Murti, with his consort as Gnanambigai. A Paadal Petra Sthalam venerated in the Tevaram, the temple marks the site where desire was subdued by grace and then redeemed. As one of the eight shrines where Shiva appears as a Samhara Murti, it draws devotees seeking mastery over the senses. The chief festival is the Kamadahana festival during Masi Magam (February–March), followed by a ten-day Brahmotsavam.
