Bhramaramba at Srisailam, invoked as 'Sri shaile Bhramarambika', is the sixth Maha Shakti Peetha and one of the most exalted, for the same hill also houses the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, the only site in India where a Jyotirlinga and a Maha Shakti Peetha share a single temple complex. By Shakta tradition the neck (greeva) of Sati fell here. The goddess is 'Bhramaramba', Mother of the Bees, recalling the legend in which Devi took the form of a swarm of bees (bhramara) to destroy the demon Arunasura, invulnerable to all creatures save these; a perennial humming, likened to bees, is said to be heard behind the sanctum. Shiva stayed here as Mallikarjuna, 'Lord of Jasmine', and Parvati as Bhramaramba, to remain near their son Kartikeya. Worship of both icons is believed to grant the combined grace of Shiva and Shakti, liberation, and relief from Pitru and Graha doshas. Chief festivals are Maha Shivaratri, Navaratri (Dasara), Ugadi and Kumbhotsavam, drawing vast pilgrim throngs to the Nallamala forest shrine on the Krishna river.
