Sthala Mahātmyam

The Mayureshwar (Moreshwar) Temple at Morgaon is the foremost shrine of the Ashtavinayaka and both the starting and ending point of the pilgrimage, which is deemed incomplete without a final return here. Sthala mahatmya: Ganesha incarnated to slay the demon Sindhu (Sindhurasura), who had swallowed a boon-given bowl of amrita; riding a peacock (Sanskrit mayura, Marathi mora) he vanquished the demon, and so is worshipped as Mayureshwar, Lord of the Peacock. Morgaon is revered as the adya-pitha, the foremost centre of the Ganapatya sect that regards Ganesha as the Supreme Being; the Mudgala Purana devotes twenty-two chapters to its glory and the Ganesha Purana counts it among Ganesha's three chief abodes and the only one on earth. The self-manifest black-stone murti has its trunk turned left, is seated with Siddhi and Buddhi, and is sheltered by a cobra. The fort-like temple has a surrounding wall and four gates for the four yugas and a large Nandi at the entrance. Festivals: Ganesh Chaturthi, Maghi Ganesh Jayanti and Vijayadashami.
